2019/20 Zachry Series: A Season of Collaboration

YOSA is excited to begin a new season with a series full of collaborations. The 2019/20 Zachry Series will showcase phenomenal orchestral music presented with a variety of solo musicians and arts organizations.

The season begins with a performance by the top players from the YOSA Philharmonic side-by-side with their teachers and mentors. San Antonio Symphony Concertmaster Eric Gratz is the featured soloist in Mozart’s elegant Violin Concerto No. 4, written when the composer was only 19 years old. The rest of the program features exuberant and carefree music from three different centuries.

In November, the YOSA Philharmonic is joined by cellist Christine Lamprea, a YOSA alumna and Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner, in their program Russian Fireworks. Lamprea returns to San Antonio as soloist in the electrifying and virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich. Also on the program is Stravinsky’s spectacular orchestral suite from The Firebird, a fairytale ballet based on Russian folklore.

Join us in February before watching the Academy Awards for an afternoon concert of movie music with YOSA and the San Antonio Chamber Choir. The performance will include classics by Beethoven, Elgar, Mozart, and Orff that have appeared in Oscar-winning movies, plus beloved film music from Edward Scissorhands; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; The Lord of the Rings; Schindler’s List; and more.

We close out the season with a complete performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, an evocative journey through the tales of the Arabian Nights, featuring the remarkable young dancers of San Antonio Youth Ballet. Plus, celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with the heroic Leonore Overture No. 3, and explore the Bohemian countryside with Smetana’s musical travelogue, The Moldau.

The season certainly has something for everyone. The collaborative presentations of these programs make for a celebration of the arts in its various forms.
